Introduction
A land of mystery and beauty, Hautes Fagnes is Belgium’s highest and wildest natural reserve, where misty moors stretch endlessly into the horizon. Wooden boardwalks wind through peat bogs and heather-covered landscapes, leading to hidden waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints. In winter, the region transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for cross-country skiing. The untouched wilderness, punctuated by charming villages like Malmedy, offers an escape into nature’s raw beauty. Whether hiking, birdwatching, or simply breathing in the crisp air, Hautes Fagnes is a sanctuary for the soul.
Day 1 Itinerary

Morning: Exploring the Fagne Wallonne Nature Reserve
Start your journey in the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Nature Park, Belgium’s largest and most mysterious moorland. Begin your hike at Signal de Botrange, the highest point in Belgium at 694 meters, and follow the Fagne Wallonne Trail. Walk along wooden boardwalks through vast peat bogs, misty landscapes, and golden-hued grasslands. The peaceful silence and rugged beauty make it an unforgettable experience.

Hidden Gem: Look for the Poleur Fagne, one of the most untouched areas in the reserve, where you can spot rare plant species and, if you're lucky, wild deer.

Lunch:
Enjoy a rustic lunch at Maison du Parc-Botrange, a visitor center and café serving hearty Belgian dishes. Try the tartiflette (potato and cheese casserole) or a warm bowl of Ardennes-style soup.

Afternoon: The Noir Flohay and The Mystical Trees
After lunch, hike towards Noir Flohay, one of the most famous spots in Hautes Fagnes. This surreal landscape features burnt, twisted pine trees that stand like ghostly figures against the misty sky. It’s an incredible place for photography and reflection.

Hidden Gem: Follow the trail to the Gileppe Dam, where you’ll find an impressive stone lion statue and a panoramic viewing platform.

Dinner:
Dine at Le Mont Rigi, a cozy restaurant offering local specialties like Ardennes game meat and trout from the local rivers.

Drinks:
End the night with a drink at Brasserie de Bellevaux, a family-run brewery where you can taste craft beers made with pure Ardennes water.

Day 2 Itinerary

Morning: The Bayehon Waterfall & Reinhardstein Castle
Start your day with a short but rewarding hike to Cascade du Bayehon, one of Belgium’s highest waterfalls. This hidden gem flows down mossy rocks into a peaceful forest setting, perfect for a moment of tranquility.

Next, head to Reinhardstein Castle, a dramatic fortress perched on a rocky outcrop. Take a guided tour through its medieval halls, weapon collection, and historic tapestries, then admire the breathtaking view over the Warche Valley.

Hidden Gem: Just behind the castle, follow a small hidden trail leading to the Warche River, where you can enjoy a quiet picnic by the water.

Lunch:
Stop for lunch at La Chaumière du Lac, a restaurant overlooking Lake Robertville. Their local cheese fondue and smoked Ardennes ham platter are a must-try.

Afternoon: Lake Robertville and Surrounding Trails
Spend your afternoon walking along the scenic Lake Robertville, a tranquil spot surrounded by forests and rolling hills. If you’re visiting in summer, you can rent a kayak or take a refreshing swim in the lake.

Hidden Gem: Follow the Nez de Napoléon viewpoint trail, offering a spectacular bird’s-eye view over the valley.

Dinner:
Dine at L'Ancienne Barrière, a charming countryside inn serving seasonal Belgian dishes like pheasant with cranberry sauce or wild boar stew.

Drinks:
Relax at La Brasserie de Malmedy, where you can sip on regional craft beers and enjoy the cozy tavern atmosphere.

Day 3 Itinerary

Morning: Baraque Michel and Fagne de la Poleûr
On your final day, visit Baraque Michel, an old refuge house that has guided lost travelers for centuries. Take a peaceful hike through Fagne de la Poleûr, one of the most untouched areas of Hautes Fagnes, where vast open moorlands stretch as far as the eye can see.

Hidden Gem: Visit the Croix des Fiancés, a haunting memorial dedicated to a tragic love story where a couple perished in the fens during a snowstorm.

Lunch:
Enjoy lunch at Ferme Libert, a rustic mountain hut serving local comfort food like tartiflette and Belgian waffles.

Afternoon: Relaxing in Spa’s Thermal Baths
End your trip with some well-deserved relaxation in Spa, the world-famous town that gave its name to the word “spa.” Spend the afternoon at the Thermes de Spa, where you can soak in natural thermal waters, enjoy a sauna, or indulge in a wellness treatment.

Hidden Gem: Take a short walk to the Pouhon Pierre-le-Grand, a historic mineral spring where the waters were once favored by Russian tsars.

Dinner:
Dine at L’Art de Vivre, a fine-dining restaurant in Spa offering modern takes on Belgian cuisine with locally sourced ingredients.

Drinks:
End the trip with a celebratory drink at La Cour de la Reine, a stylish bar offering an excellent selection of Ardennes whiskies and cocktails.
