Introduction
Day 1 Itinerary
Morning:
Begin your day early and drive from Luxembourg to Namur. Upon arrival, head straight to the Citadel of Namur. The citadel is the city’s main attraction, sitting high above the city and offering panoramic views of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. You can explore the underground tunnels or take a walking tour through its beautiful gardens. Don’t miss the Museum of Ancient Weapons inside the citadel, which offers an exciting glimpse into the fortress’s military past.
Lunch:
After a morning spent at the citadel, enjoy lunch at one of the charming cafés located in Place d'Armes. This central square is surrounded by historic buildings, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. Try some local specialties, such as Belgian fries or croquettes with Leffe beer.
Afternoon:
After lunch, take a short walk to the Saint-Aubain Cathedral, a neo-classical masterpiece with stunning interior details, such as its baroque altarpiece and stained-glass windows. Then head towards The Felicien Rops Museum, named after the famous 19th-century Belgian artist. The museum houses an impressive collection of his works and is located in the artist’s former home. Afterward, take a walk along the Meuse River, enjoying the tranquil views and stopping at the Parc de la Boverie, a lovely park where you can relax by the water or explore the art exhibits.
Evening:
For dinner, head to La Table des Sépultures, a highly recommended restaurant known for its traditional Belgian dishes and intimate atmosphere. After dinner, enjoy an evening stroll along the riverbanks, or perhaps visit a cozy café in the old town for a Belgian hot chocolate or coffee.
Day 2 Itinerary
Morning:
Begin your second day with a visit to the Museum of Arts and History. Located in the heart of Namur, the museum exhibits a wide range of artistic and historical pieces, including works from the Renaissance to modern art. Spend a couple of hours here, enjoying the artworks and learning about the region’s rich history.
Lunch:
Head to Brasserie La Cale for lunch, a laid-back restaurant offering Belgian specialties such as Moules-Frites (mussels and fries), a classic Belgian dish. The restaurant’s riverfront terrace provides a perfect setting for a relaxed meal.
Afternoon:
After lunch, take a boat tour along the Meuse River. Several companies offer river cruises that provide stunning views of Namur’s surroundings, including the Meuse valley and the Citadel from the water. If you're feeling adventurous, rent a bike and cycle along the river, taking in the scenic views of the city and its nature reserves. For a more active adventure, head towards Parc Louise-Marie, where you can hike or enjoy a picnic in the lush greenery. If you prefer history, visit Jardin des Légendes, a garden dedicated to local legends and myths.
Evening:
For dinner, make your way to L'Artisan for a refined yet cozy atmosphere. Known for its creative Belgian cuisine, it’s a great spot to try dishes like carbonnade flamande (beef stew) or waterzooi (chicken stew). Afterward, explore the vibrant nightlife of Namur, either by visiting one of the many bars in Place d’Armes or enjoying a drink at a riverside terrace.
Day 3 Itinerary
Morning:
On your last day in Namur, start with a visit to the Castle of Crupet, located just outside the city. This small yet beautiful medieval castle is surrounded by green fields and offers spectacular views of the Meuse Valley. Explore the castle grounds and nearby forests, which are perfect for a morning hike.
Lunch:
Return to Namur for lunch at Le Bistro de l'Artisan, where you can enjoy local specialties and Belgian beers in a relaxed atmosphere.
