Introduction
A charming gem in Germany’s Saarland region, Saarburg captivates with its cascading waterfall at the heart of the old town, where half-timbered houses perch along the Leuk River. The Saarburg Castle offers sweeping views of vineyards and the winding Saar River below. Strolling through its colorful streets, visitors find inviting wine taverns, artisanal shops, and the historic Buttermarkt, where life moves at a gentle pace. Whether enjoying a glass of Riesling, cruising along the river, or taking in the fairytale scenery, Saarburg is a picturesque escape from the ordinary.
Day 1 Itinerary

Morning: Exploring the Old Town & Saarburg Castle
Start your day in the heart of Saarburg’s Altstadt (Old Town), where half-timbered houses line the cobbled streets. The highlight is the Saarburg Waterfall, an unexpected and dramatic sight right in the middle of town. Watch as the Leuk River plunges 20 meters, creating a picturesque backdrop for the surrounding cafés and shops.

Next, make your way up to Saarburg Castle, a 10th-century fortress offering panoramic views of the town and the Saar River Valley. Climb the castle tower for the best vantage point and imagine life in medieval times as you wander through the ancient ruins.

Hidden Gem: Behind the castle, take the lesser-known Wehrweg Path, a short scenic walk through vineyards with stunning views over the town.

Lunch:
Dine at Zunftstube, a cozy restaurant near the waterfall, serving regional favorites like Saarland-style schnitzel with mustard sauce and fresh trout from the Saar River.

Afternoon: Wine Tasting in the Saar Valley
Saarburg is part of the Mosel wine region, known for its world-class Rieslings. Spend your afternoon exploring Weingut Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken, one of the most prestigious wineries in the area. Take a guided tour of their historic cellars, learn about winemaking, and enjoy a wine tasting session overlooking the vineyards.

Hidden Gem: Visit Weingut Van Volxem, a winery with an impressive modern tasting room and breathtaking terrace views over the Saar River.

Dinner:
Head to Burgrestaurant Saarburg, a restaurant nestled within the castle ruins, where you can enjoy dishes like wild boar ragout and Riesling-infused pork medallions while admiring the sunset.

Drinks:
End your day at Weinstube Krutweiler, a charming wine tavern offering a great selection of local Saar and Mosel wines in a rustic setting.

Day 2 Itinerary

Morning: Hiking to the Cloef Viewpoint & Saarschleife
Start the day with a scenic drive to Orscholz, where you’ll hike to the famous Cloef Viewpoint. This easy 2 km trail leads you to an iconic view of the Saarschleife (Saar Loop), a breathtaking river bend surrounded by lush forests. For an even better experience, visit the Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife, a treetop walkway that offers stunning panoramic views.

Hidden Gem: If you want a quieter alternative, take the trail to Montclair Castle, a hidden ruin in the Saar Valley.

Lunch:
Enjoy a relaxed lunch at Panorama Restaurant Cloef, where you can savor local specialties while overlooking the Saar River. Their seasonal game dishes are highly recommended.

Afternoon: Saar River Cruise & Mettlach
In the afternoon, take a Saar River boat cruise from Mettlach, a charming town just north of Saarburg. The cruise passes through vineyards, cliffs, and forests, offering a different perspective on the region’s beauty.

After the cruise, explore Mettlach, home to the Villeroy & Boch Ceramic Museum, where you can learn about the town’s rich porcelain-making history.

Hidden Gem: Visit the Old Abbey Brewery in Mettlach for a beer tasting session before heading back to Saarburg.

Dinner:
Return to Saarburg for dinner at Restaurant Niederleuken, known for its fresh regional fish and seasonal wild mushroom dishes.

On your final day, take a 30-minute drive to Trier, one of Germany’s most historic cities. Begin at the Porta Nigra, a massive Roman gate that has stood for nearly 1,800 years. Stroll through Hauptmarkt, a lively square surrounded by colorful medieval buildings, and visit the Trier Cathedral, home to relics dating back to Roman times.
